Sarah Barker Mason was born on June 8, 1851, the daughter of
Broadstreet Mason and Betsy Libby.. On
December 25, 1869, at the age
of 18, she married James Downes Maddocks.
Sarah was apparently a woman full of spunk and spirit. She was known to have a sharp
tongue at times and was not afraid to use it. She was also noted for making up, and
singing, rather ribald rhymes about local town officials in Monroe.
